President Samia Suluhu Hassan Inaugurates Mtibwa Sugar Factory's New Irrigation Dam

On August 3rd, during the Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibitions, President Samia Suluhu Hassan inaugurated a pivotal irrigation dam at the Mtibwa Sugar Factory in Morogoro. This landmark project is integral to Tanzania’s national strategy, aimed at enhancing sugar production and driving economic growth through increased agricultural output.

The newly inaugurated dam will provide a dependable water source for the sugarcane plantations, significantly boosting productivity and supporting the local economy. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT), which focuses on sustainable agricultural development.

In her address, President Samia underscored the importance of the project in strengthening Tanzania’s agricultural sector, noting its potential to uplift local communities by creating economic opportunities. She called on the residents to safeguard the dam and recognize its significance in promoting sustainable development and social progress.

The Mtibwa Sugar Factory Irrigation Dam marks a major advancement toward achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to agricultural investment and community empowerment.

Located in Tanzania’s Morogoro region, the Mtibwa Sugar Factory is a key player in the country’s sugar industry, producing approximately 70,000 metric tons annually. The factory is currently undergoing a significant expansion to enhance its capacity and efficiency, ensuring it meets the growing domestic demand for sugar. These expansion efforts include modernizing the factory’s facilities and increasing production capacity, in line with Tanzania’s broader strategy to boost agricultural output.
